Not Reaching Your Goals? So What! By Valerie Hylen You
started the year with all kinds of resolutions right? Maybe they were the
same resolutions you had last year or even the year before. It isn’t even the
end of January and you are already off track with reaching these goals. So
What??? Many
of us give up on our goals too quickly and easily. When we see others who
have been able to achieve success where we have failed, we often assume it
was easy for them, that they succeeded on their first attempt, or that they
never had setbacks along the way. Often
we quit because we are embarrassed that our friends and family have heard
about our big goals and are aware that we have not succeeded in doing the
great things we said we were going to do. So What! They probably haven’t
succeeded in accomplishing all they were going to do either! Years
ago, I remember reading newspaper headlines that said “JFK, Jr. flunks bar
again!!!” How embarrassing! So what! He was a fabulous role model when he
kept taking the bar exams as many times as it took him to succeed! Use him as
your role model and mentor and get back on track to try again. Unless you are
a really famous celebrity, no one really cares how many tries it takes for
you to finally succeed, and your story won’t make the front page of every
major newspaper in the country. Think
about it – the only way to really fail completely is to give up. If
you have become frustrated with reaching your goals don’t give up, but try
adopting a “so what” attitude about the past and start over today. Don’t
expect to stay on track every day. Most of us are not perfect and fall off
the wagon a few times here and there. So what! At the end of each day, review
your choices and actions, say “so what!” about the ones that were less than
perfect, and make plans to have better choices and actions tomorrow. Don’t
let perfectionism get in your way. Let’s
face it, it you stay on track even half the time, you will be a lot closer to
your goals by this time last year, than if you give up completely. The more
success you have each month, the stronger your faith will be to keep on
trying and you will become more and more successful. Giving
up because you have not stayed on track is just finding an excuse to quit. It
is like giving up your whole resolve to lose weight because you didn’t stick
to your eating plan the first month or because you binged one day. Most
smokers who have quit permanently had to quit several (or many) times before
finally being successful. Many of those who were finally successful will live
much longer and healthier lives because they said “so what” to their failed
attempts to quit and kept trying until they succeeded. Resolve
today to try again, so what if you failed in the past! _________________________________________________________________________________________________ Copyright
