Pomegranate

Friend Diagnosed with Illness

Question: Pomegranate

I am interested in knowing more about pomegranate.

Answer:

Thank you for your question.  I have written an article that describes Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.).  The history, nutritional properties, how to open, how to juice a pomegranate, and recipes for pomegranate syrup, molasses, punch, molasses marinade, and vinegar are included.  The link is: Article.Pomegranate

Question: Friend Diagnosed with Illness

When a close friend is diagnosed with a serious illness such as cancer, what is the best way to help the person deal with it?   I want to help but am not sure what to do?

Answer:

Thanks for your question.  Situations like this are really tough.  You don’t know what to say or do.  I think that listening to your friend and asking them how you can help is one of the ways.  Also, asking yourself,  ‘What would be helpful for me in a similar situation?’ will provide some insight.  Many times we already know what to do, but are scared that we might be more hindrance than help.

When my Mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, we (the children) went to her home and listened to what it was she needed.  More than anything, she wanted to talk about how she felt.  After her operation, we listened, prepared some food so that she wouldn’t have to while she was recuperating, cleaned the house, and made ourselves available when she needed us.  One other time when my Dad was sick and all of our time was spent at the hospital, we came home one evening to a roasted turkey dropped off at the house by one of my friends.  In my mind, it is the little gifts of kindness that help people get through these difficult times.
