WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

In this chapter, I will define what the various terms mean and then discuss the colours and

how they can be used.  Included are some of the plants, their colours, and recipes for the various colour energies. I have identified the common name first and then the Latin name in brackets as the names are sometimes different according to where you purchase them from.

Annual is a plant that completes its life cycle in one year – from seed to bloom – to seed –

in a single season.  They are often called ‘bedding plants’ and can be purchased at garden centres or started indoors to get a head start on our short growing season.  Generally speaking, we buy or plant them in the spring and they flower that year and are replaced next year.

Biennial is a plant that grows vegetatively during the first year and fruits and dies during the second year.  Biennials often self-sow, but you can help them along by scattering the ripe

seed where you would like them to grow.

Perennial is a plant that grows for several years with new herbaceous growth each year.

Their tops die down to the ground in winter, but their roots remain alive and send up new growth in spring.  Many perennials, such as peonies, are extremely long-lived.

Herb is a plant that can be a seed-producing annual, biennial, or perennial that does not develop persistent woody tissue but dies down at the end of a growing season.  Herbs

are valuable for their medicinal, savoury, or aromatic properties.

This is the beginning of the eighth chapter of the book The Healing Garden: A Place Of

Peace by Gwen Nyhus Stewart.  There's lots more information online, but if you've read

this much, you'll undoubtedly find the book of great value!
